GEORGIA'S
BLUE RIDGE AND COHUTTA MOUNTAINS
The
Blue Ridge Mountains begin in South Central Pennsylvania and
extend south, joining the Appalachian Mountains which extend
all the way to Alabama. The Blue Ridge Mountain Range
comprises most of the Appalachian Mountains. This unique
mountain range offers everything from rolling foothills to
the highest peaks in the Eastern United States – over 6,000
feet.
The famous Appalachian Trail begins at Springer Mountain in
beautiful Fannin County, Georgia and extends more than 2,000
miles north to Mount Katahdin in Maine, passing through 14
states along the way. Hikers normally take 6 months to
complete the trek. With about 80 miles of Appalachian Trail
just in Georgia, you’re sure to find some excellent
backpacking adventures in Fannin County.
The Cohutta Mountains are a smaller range located west of
the Appalachian and Blue Ridge Mountains. You may have heard
them referred to as the Great Smokey Mountains, the name
used further north. The Cohuttas are actually quite a bit
older than their Appalachian neighbors. |

The
Cherokee considered the Cohuttas to be the "poles of the
shed," holding up the sky in this, their "enchanted land."
Many Cherokee would farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains,
leaving them during the winter and staying at the Cherokee
village of Aska, or "winter home." This beautiful area of
Fannin County is known as the “gateway to the Blue Ridge
Mountains”. |
